Three Patch-area schools will be competing in the Division II girls’ basketball playoffs tonight at Rhode Island College, and we will be providing a live chat and running play by play for the proceedings!
- At 6 p.m., No. 8 Prout looks for another upset, as they take on No. 4 Moses Brown.
- At 8 p.m., No. 2 Narragansett faces No. 11 Coventry.
Taking a look at each of the remaining teams, and how they won last Sunday:
- Narragansett made it to the semifinals with a 54-48 win against No. 7 East Greenwich. The Mariners went on a 25-0 run against East Greenwich stretching from the end of the first half to roughly the eight-minute mark of the second. Narragansett also probably benefits the most from the elimination of No. 1 Rogers, as the Mariners only go five players deep, with only one of their starting five over 6’0”.
- On paper, Coventry upset No. 3 Scituate and No. 6 Johnston. However, neither team could handle the pressing, attacking defense of the Oakers, and Scituate was playing without a year-long starter after she sustained a leg injury in the final two weeks of the season. Coventry will likely have a tougher time with Narragansett, which players a similar style but at a higher and more consistent level so far through the 2012-13 season.
- Excluding the upheaval in the boys’ state tournament, Prout pulled the shocker of the winter sports’ playoffs so far, as they upset No. 1 Rogers 49-43. The Crusaders did so with outstanding defense and timely jumpers, the latter of which they’ll need more of against Moses Brown. The Quakers, while lacking the individual talent from 1 to 5 of Rogers, played a more composed game than the Vikings, and didn’t crumble down the stretch in an ugly 44-40 win against St. Ray’s.
The winners of the two games play each other for the Division II title on 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 10 at the Ryan Center at the University of Rhode Island.
