PROVIDENCE – A trio of 3-point shots from Sarah McGrath in the first half and 16 points from Alyssa Derrick helped No. 11 Coventry upset No. 3 Scituate 55-48 in the quarterfinals of the Division II girls’ basketball playoffs at Rhode Island College on Sunday afternoon.
Although McGrath only finished with 10, her open 3s in the first half opened up the paint the rest of the game for Coventry. This led to open midrange jumpers and rolls to the hoop for Derrick, and room for guards Thurstina Horton (10 points) and Katie Boudoin (9) to drive.
Horton struggled with free throws down the stretch, but Scituate couldn’t capitalize. Coventry led by nine with 3:01 left, and only a late three by Jordin Pino kept the final margin under 10 points.
Renee Bourgault led Scituate with 14 points. Sophomore center Sadie Ross finished with 13 points, but struggled most of the day to finish shots inside.
With the win, Coventry continues on in the Division II playoffs. They play No. 2 Narragansett at Rhode Island College 8 p.m. Wednesday. The Mariners beat East Greenwich 54-48 thanks to a 25-0 run. The Division II final is Sunday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m. at the Ryan Center on the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus.
Editor's Note: Teams and spectators began Sunday's game with a moment of silence in memory of Coventry School Committee member and longtime educator, Nancy Sprengelmeyer, who passed away earlier that morning.
