Throughout the month of November, students at Blackrock Elementary School brought in food items to be donated to the Coventry Community Food Bank to benefit local families in need during the holiday season.

Each grade level was asked to donate specific types of food items, allowing for a varied collection of goods that are frequently in need at the food bank.

Pre-K and Kindergarten students were asked to donate boxed pasta; first grade collected soup; second grade students brought in canned pasta, third graders collected peanut butter and/or jelly, the fourth grade collected canned fruit and fifth grade students donated canned vegetables. Principal Alicia Castle asked students and there families, to If possible, collect the healthier varieties of these items, including low sodium, fat and sugar.

On Nov. 30, the final day of the food drive, the school hosted a Slipper Day for students, who could bring in a $1 donation for the opportunity to wear slippers during the school day. The initiative raised $177 that was used to purchase fresh produce for the food bank to be donated along with the non-perishables.

Blackrock students frequently take part in charitable activities, including security items for children to benefit Bags of Dignity and Crazy Hair Day that raised $155 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
