Business Violation

In addition to granting business licenses, Council members, acting as the Coventry Liquor Control Board, considered a violation of Bella’s Sports Bar, located at 1152 Main St.

According to a police report, on Mar. 14 at 2:56 a.m., during a routine business check, a Coventry officer noticed that lights were still on inside and several vehicles were parked in front of the bar.

During further investigation, two officers observed on the rear deck of the bar, a male bartender drinking a shot of something while socializing with three non-employees, one who appeared to be holding a beer mug. Upon knocking at the front entrance and being let in, police noted a female present who was visibly intoxicated and having trouble standing, however there were no longer any alcoholic beverages visible.

According to the report, the bartender was polite and stated that he understood they were in the bar much too late and also admitted that alcohol was still being served.

Owner Dave Thomas told the Council that he was very embarrassed for himself and his business and assured that this type of incident would never happen again. He also stated that the bartender had been suspended.

Police Chief Bryan Volpe recommended that a warning be given to the business.

"Knowing Mr. Thomas and how he conducts business in town, I request that a warning be given to the establishment," he said.

Council members including President Gary Cote agreed to Chief Volpe's recommendation, issuing a warning to the bar.

"I trust Chief Volpe's judgement, but if the Council has to address this again, I'm going to suggest much stricter punishment," said Cote.
